Coyotes come in a wide range of body sizes, but they are medium-sized canines. Running dogs, these slender animals weigh between 20 and 50 pounds. A coyote's size can be influenced by a variety of factors, including sex and age.

The typical length (including tail) of a coyote is about forty-eight inches. On average, they are between 21 and 24 inches tall, depending on gender. These are about the size of a medium sized pet dog.

When fully grown, a typical coyote is about 3 feet long and a little over 2 feet tall. The average adult coyote weighs about thirty pounds. In general, males tend to be larger and heavier than females, but there are exceptions.

According to some sources, wild coyotes have been seen weighing 60, 80 or even 100 pounds. A coyote's size can vary based on a number of factors, including how healthy it is.

Coyotes can grow to between twenty and fifty pounds as adults. A healthy newborn puppy should weigh eight to ten ounces, or about half a pound. Gender-based weight differences mean that women generally weigh less than men.

A coyote's weight may be influenced by its place in the social order. The coyote's large size can be used to identify male and female alphas. Solitary coyotes may be malnourished and underweight compared to pack coyotes.

In terms of height and weight, female and male coyotes differ in size, with female coyotes being smaller and lighter than males. Female coyotes stand 21-22 inches tall and are two to three inches shorter than males.

The first year of a coyote's life is devoted to developing their hunting and social skills.

At birth, coyote pups weigh less than a pound. At nine months, puppies may gain between 15 and 20 pounds. At nine months of age, all of the coyote's teeth have grown. Coyotes consume protein and hunt during the first 12 months of their lives. Coyotes reach their maximum size at 12 months of age.

Coyotes are medium-sized carnivores, and they have many predators to watch out for. Cougars, wolves and bears often mistake coyotes for prey due to their small size. Coyotes tend to avoid conflict with their larger counterparts, such as wolves. They keep the pack size constant by avoiding confrontation as much as possible.

Coyotes are leaner animals compared to wolves. American wolves stand 26 to 32 inches tall and weigh an average of 50 to 110 pounds.

The two animals have very similar coat colors but very different facial features. Compared to the size of its head, coyotes have shorter nose pads and a narrower muzzle. The wolf has a huge head, broad nose and thick nose pads, but has small ears.

During summer and fall, wolf pups look so much like coyotes that it can be difficult to tell them apart. Young coyotes, on the other hand, are much smaller than young wolves. Because of this, wolves will grow and mature faster.

A clear size difference between wolves and coyotes can be seen in the size of the paws. The nails on the wolf's paws can grow up to five inches long. An adult coyote's claws only grow to three inches long.
